Along with Halloween and Thanksgiving, the once deeply American tradition of Black Friday has thoroughly infiltrated Australia. And no, you’re not imagining it, the annual sale event is starting earlier with many retailers kicking off proceedings well before November 28. Brian Walker, founder of retail consultancy group The Retail Doctor, says its importance is increasing.

“With consumer budgets under pressure and traditional peak periods like December showing muted growth, the Black Friday weekend stands out as the pivotal moment in the retail calendar,” he says.
Speaking to data from 2024, Walker predicts many shoppers will be looking to make significant purchases.

“Fewer transactions but higher spend per purchase last year suggest consumers are postponing smaller buys and using this weekend to go big — televisions, appliances, premium fashion — not simply top up the basket,” he says.

More Australians than ever are expected to shop the sales period from Friday, November 28 until Monday, December 1 (Cyber Monday). New research from The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) with Roy Morgan found Australians are expected to spend $6.8 billion over the Black Friday-Cyber Monday period. This is an increase of four per cent on last year. Approximately 6 million Australians are expected to take part in the shopping extravaganza.

David Jones, which launched a new loyalty program with Qantas this year, says Black Friday has sharpened in importance for the department store and in the industry more broadly. The retailer sees three times the number of customers during this period.

“Black Friday has become a key moment on the retail calendar, with more Australians choosing to shop with David Jones as they look for quality and value ahead of the festive season,” says Erica Berchtold, chief commercial officer at David Jones.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of sales, you’re not alone.

The best Black Friday sales in Australia in 2025

HOME

Black Friday is an ideal time to buy the boring but necessary household items (that are unnecessarily expensive). The Good Guys have a range of offers across all categories. At Myer, you can pick up the likes of feather down quilts and other rather more fun things such as ice-cream machines. Dyson will make chores more tolerable, even weirdly satisfying, with a slew of offers on vacuums or opt to stay in bed all weekend instead with a new mattress from Koala and lovely new sheets from Cultiver, which has a site-wide sale. Save almost 50 per cent on a washing machine at Appliances Online and if coffee is life, then a new machine ought to be your next investment — Nespresso has several alluring options.

TECH

Get ready for the summer of sport (on the telly) with an impressive new TV, LG has some serious savings on LED ones and while you’re at it, get a robot vacuum to get on with things while you put your feet up. If you’re struggling to focus (like most of us, then) it may be time to upgrade your headphones — Bose has a range of deals on Amazon. Or, if you’re getting serious about fitness goals you could get an Aura ring at 20 per cent off. And Samsung has a range of deals on everything from smart watches to desktop computers.

TRAVEL

If you’re planning a summer holiday or getting organised for the year ahead (maybe even just looking for a ticket to dream) then Black Friday is a good opportunity to make smart bookings. Luxury Escapes is extending its Black Friday offers after huge demand for its curated deals. Meanwhile the world is your oyster with deals starting from $12 a night at Booking.com and huge savings at wotif.com. We all know that preparing for a holiday is half the fun, and perhaps next year you will become the champion packer you know you can be. A good start is new luggage, Samsonite has up to 50 per cent off. While at Australian label July you can save up to $240 when you buy two items.

BEAUTY

Sales season is an ideal time to stock up on the products you’ll use down to the last drop, pick up stocking stuffers for friends and colleagues, and perhaps a little treat for yourself. Adore Beauty has 50 per cent off almost everything, perfect for picking up cult favourite products such as SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Vitamin C Serum. The Iconic has 40 per cent off hair tools and Myer has 20 per cent off on a range of beauty products.

FASHION

Party season has arrived, and what to wear? Whether you’re looking for a dress for Christmas lunch, new swimmers for the summer or clothes for the kids because they just will not stop growing, there’s a range of deals to suit. David Jones has up to 30 per cent off Australian women’s designer brands, including the likes of Camilla & Marc, as well as international brands like The Frankie Shop and Chloe. The eagerly anticipated Net-a-Porter sale, which stocks everything from Loewe to The Row, kicked off this week with up to 50 per cent off an impressive line-up of labels. You can find good basics on-sale at The Iconic, including up to 40 per cent off runners. The Black Friday sales are a great change to support Australian fashion brands, too. You can take a further 25 per cent off some sale items at Aje, who made their Paris Fashion Week debut this year. A little sparkle in the festive season never hurts and Mejuri has sales across its fine and demi-fine collections — ideal for a gift, or for yourself.

WINE

Be everybody’s favourite guest and/or host this festive season by serving good plonk. The Australian Wine Club has several Black Friday sales, including 14 bottles at only $119.88 and a fab selection of 12 Aussie reds at half price.
