In a short few years Black Friday, once a solely - and rather extremely- American tradition, has transformed Australia’s consumer culture. In an increasingly global and connected world this makes sense. Taking over from the Boxing Day Sales as the premier shopping event, the four day Black Friday weekend - this year held from November 29 to Monday December 2 (Cyber Monday) is expected to generate $6.7 billion. According to the Australian Retailer’s Association this is an increase of 5.5 per cent. As many of us have already noticed, many of the sales now begin earlier than the traditional Friday after the American Thanksgiving holiday. The Australian Retailer’s Association predicts retailers will experience a $69.7 billion boost in the six week period leading up to Christmas.
What this means also is that there is an overwhelming amount of Black Friday deals on offer. To help navigate this - and to minimise the chance of a sales fever regrettable purchase - we’ve edited the best deals across categories important to readers of The Australian.
In the excitement of nabbing a bargain it can be easy to forget some of the non-negotiable rules of shopping the sales: make a list, check what you really need or if an item is already on your wish list and think of several ways you’re going to wear or use your new purchase.
Wish lists at the ready? Let’s shop.
