Sydney siege: former prime minister John Howard ‘sad for nation’

FORMER prime minister John Howard says he is saddened by the siege in Sydney’s Martin Place this week.

John Howard: "An Act of Terror"

JOHN Howard has described the hostage-taking and shootings in Sydney’s Martin Place as an “act of terror”.

Speaking after placing flowers at the makeshift memorial in Martin Place just near his own office the former Prime Minister said he was saddened like the 23 million Australians

“It is a very sad event for this country, “ he said.

Mr Howard, who was prime minister when the September 11 attacks and Bali bombings occurred told The Australian: “It was an act of terror”.

Mr Howard said he believed Prime Minister Tony Abbott and NSW Premier Mike Baird had given voice the feelings of the nation. He also praised Bill Shorten for so strongly supporting the government.

The Prime Minister has referred to the shootings as a “brush with terror”.
