University of Wollongong appoints Chinese-born chemical engineer as its new vice-chancellor

A scientist born in rural China who became one of Australia’s most eminent chemical scientists has been appointed the next vice-chancellor of the University of Wollongong.

Eminent chemical engineer and advanced materials scientist Max Lu has been appointed the next vice-chancellor and president of the University of Wollongong, to start work in May next year.

Professor Lu is currently president and vice-chancellor of University of Surrey in the UK.

Born and raised in rural China, Professor Lu moved to Australia to complete his PhD at the University of Queensland, where he became Provost and senior vice-president.

He is a member of the UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and has served on the Australian Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council.

He founded the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Functional Nanomaterials at UQ and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017.

Charles Darwin University has appointed Trevor Riley AO as its fifth chancellor. He is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.
