Southern Cross University is celebrating its standing as the most improved university in the Oceania region after a major jump in its position in the QS World University Rankings.

The university’s position at 576th in the 2025 QS rankings is well into the top half of the approximately 1500 universities ranked by QS. It’s also a jump of around 80 places compared to the 2024 rankings and about 200 places above its position in 2020.

It was enough to win the university the QS award for most improved award in the Oceania region, which is based on the improvement in ranking over a five-year period.

Mary Spongberg, Southern Cross University’s senior deputy vice-chancellor, was presented with the award at the QS EduData summit in Washington.

“Being recognised as Oceania’s most improved university in the QS rankings – given the size of the region and the fact that we’re a young, regional university – is a great reflection on the quality of our teaching and the global impact of our research,” Professor Spongberg said.

This year Southern Cross University had another ranking achievement, being ranked 100th in the world in the Times Higher Education Young University Ranking 2024, which applies to universities no more than 50 years old.

Tyrone Carlin, the university’s vice-chancellor, said the institution’s rise in the QS ranking was a tribute to the combined efforts of academics, researchers and staff.
