RMIT, Monash winners in Victorian Architecture Awards
RMIT University’s New Academic City project has been honoured with the Victorian Architecture Medal for 2018.
RMIT University’s New Academic Street development has won the coveted Victorian Architecture Medal in the 2018 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Designed by architecture firm Lyons in collaboration with NMBW Architecture Studio, Harrison and White, MvS Architects and Maddison Architects, the project in the Melbourne inner-city suburb of Carlton includes a library, media teaching and production facilities, student services, outdoor gardens and terraces, and space for thousands of students to study and socialise.
Lyons director Carey Lyon said it reimagined the campus as a “dynamic urban destination for students to embrace and enjoy”.
New Academic Street was also named a joint winner of the Melbourne Prize, as well as taking the top honours in educational architecture and urban design, and being honoured for interior architecture and sustainable architecture.
Monash University’s new Learning and Teaching Building, designed by John Wardle Architects, was also recognised with awards for education architecture and interior architecture.
Meaghan Dwyer, a principal of the firm, said it was designed to act as a “front door” to the university’s Clayton campus.
