Australian’s have cast over 34,000 votes in the search for the university programs which give most benefit to the nation as part of the inaugural Shaping Australia awards.
The awards program, a partnership between Universities Australia and The Australian, showcases the results of work by universities and university people in three areas. The Problem Solver award recognises research, the Future Builder Award recognises teaching, and the Community Champion Award recognises community service. Six finalists have been selected in each of the three categories and award winners will be announced at the Universities Australia conference in Canberra on February 27.
Two award winners will be named in each of the three categories – a People’s Choice winner selected by public voting, and a winner selected by a panel of eminent judges chaired by former Department of Education secretary Lisa Paul.
The other judges are former governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove, CEO of the GO Foundation Charlene Davison, Paralympic gold medallist Kurt Fearnley, editor-in-chief of The Australian Michelle Gunn, special envoy for Southeast Asia Nicholas Moore, and Nobel prize winner and former Australian National University vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt.
