Mark Scott appoints Annamarie Jagose deputy VC and provost at Sydney
University of Sydney vice-chancellor Mark Scott’s first major appointment is Annamarie Jagose as his deputy and provost.
The University of Sydney’s new vice-chancellor Mark Scott has made his first major appointment since taking the reins in July, naming Annamarie Jagose to the university’s number two role as provost and deputy vice-chancellor.
Professor Jagose, who is currently executive dean of arts and social sciences and pro-vice-chancellor (university schools) at the University of Sydney, will start the new job in October.
Professor Scott praised her “strong combination of leadership and management experience … along with experience of leading change and shaping culture within complex academic environments”.
“Her detailed understanding of the Australasian higher education sector and our current institutional and operating context positions her well for the role of provost,” he said.
Professor Jagose acknowledged she was taking on the roles at a challenging time for the higher education sector.
“Building strongly aligned academic teams and developing individual and collective capability was what attracted me to academic leadership roles in the first place,” she said.
As well as being a scholar, Professor Jagose is an award-winning novelist and short story writer. She previously held positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of Auckland before joining Sydney in 2011 as the head of the school of literature, art and media. She is a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
As arts and social sciences dean, Professor Jagose led the development and implementation of key initiatives such as the faculty’s 2017-2021 strategic plan, curriculum and coursework program reviews, and FutureFix: multidisciplinary research projects in which humanities and social sciences researchers collaborate with industry and the community on globally important issues.
Among the university-wide committees, boards and initiatives to which she has contributed are Sydney’s massive open online courses (MOOCs) strategy and the Parramatta/Westmead campus.
