John Dewar will steer the course for Universities Australia
The La Trobe University vice-chancellor John Dewar will become Universities Australia’s new chair in challenging times.
La Trobe University vice-chancellor John Dewar will be the next chair of peak body Universities Australia.
He was elected to succeed University of Queensland vice-chancellor Deborah Terry and will take up the appointment on May 25.
Professor Terry, who has been in the position for the past two-years, said Professor Dewar would bring “unrivalled knowledge and leadership” to the role “at a pivotal time for the university sector.”
“He will be an outstanding advocate for the sector, as we work to play the fullest part in national recovery [from the Covid crisis],” Professor Terry said.
Professor Dewar said Professor Terry had provided steadfast leadership during a challenging two years.
“She has been a compelling and powerful advocate for universities, their staff and students during a period of major upheaval,” he said. “She has overseen the sector’s response to bushfires, drought, global pandemic, lockdowns and border closures.”
Professor Dewar is a family law specialist and graduate of the University of Oxford who came to Australia in 1995. He held senior roles at Griffith University and the University of Melbourne before becoming La Trobe’s vice‐chancellor in 2012.
He is currently a deputy chair of UA.
