Whitwell elected CEMS chair

University of Sydney Business School dean Greg Whitwell has become the first ever non-European to chair CEMS, a global alliance of business schools which was founded in Europe. Professor Whitwell has just been formally elected chair of the group at its annual meeting in Malta.

The CEMS grouping is an unusual business school alliance in that its main purpose it to deliver a “globally integrated” master in management degree to about 1,200 students annually.

Each year the graduates, from about 60 countries, converge on a location for the graduation ceremony. Last year it was in Sydney but this year the ceremony is in Malta.

“CEMS is absolutely unique in that it is the only grouping of business schools that offers a

post graduate degree program,” Professor Whitwell said.

“This is truly education without borders. As a result, our graduates are the embodiment of what a divided world needs most: a generation of global citizens, who have experienced first-hand the benefits of cultural diversity, and who have put into practice the notion of inclusive leadership.”

Founded 30 years ago in Europe, CEMS has members in South Korea, Canada, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Chile, Japan, Brazil, Egypt, and Australia. It has just admitted the US-based Cornell SC Johnson College of Business.

Dallimore to head data science hub

Liz Dallimore has been appointed head of the new Western Australian data science hub which is being led by Curtin University. Dr Dallimore, who was previously the national director of Research engagement and commercialisation at KPMG, starts this month.

The hub is intended to help industries affected by digital disruption — including mining, oil and gas, and agriculture — use the latest developments in data science to help them stay competitive.

“There is such huge potential to harness data science in this state in a broad range of industries, from resources to agtech and life sciences,” Dr Dallimore said.
