UNE chief to move on
University of New England vice-chancellor Annabelle Duncan has let it be known she will stand down when her five-and-a-half year term ends in August next year. She brought stability to the university, implementing a new strategic plan, after the unexpected resignation of her predecessor Jim Barber in 2014.
“It has been a privilege to lead the university during this time of upheaval and opportunity in education,” Professor Duncan said. “Technology is fundamentally changing the way we teach and learn.”
She finished off with a warning. “At the same time higher education policy in Australia is unsettled. UNE sees the changes as opportunities and I am confident that it will continue to adapt and prosper in this environment.”
Martin for Deakin
Deakin University has chosen former UNSW deputy vice-chancellor Iain Martin as its next vice-chancellor, to replace Jane den Hollander when she moves on in May next year. The appointment will bring him back to Australia. Since 2016 he has headed Anglia Ruskin University in the UK.
“Professor Martin has an impressive track record of successful academic leadership and is a very good fit for Deakin,” said Deakin chancellor John Stanhope.
Professor Martin said he was looking forward to commencing the new role. “Deakin is an outstanding exemplar of a university that has delivered regional relevance, global linkages, research excellence and perhaps, most importantly, a very strong educational portfolio that blends the best of campus and digital delivery into a highly supportive educational ecosystem,” he said.
