In today’s Higher Ed Daily Brief: Academy elects new fellows
Jolly good fellows
Ten women are among the 25 new fellows elected to the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. Academy president Hugh Bradlow said the new fellows would strengthen the academies aim of ensuring that Australia remained a world leading technology economy.
The ten women elected ensure that the academy is exceeding its short-term target of electing a third of new fellows from female candidates. Professor Bradlow said the academy brought together the “brightest minds in technology, engineering and science to offer impartial, evidence-based, and practical advice.”
The women among the new candidates include the technologist Genevieve Bell from ANU whose work looks for solutions for humans to live successfully alongside artificial intelligence, University of New England vice-chancellor Annabelle Duncan, chief innovation officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Sarah Pearson, and the head of UNSW’s School of Optometry and Vision Science Fiona Stapleton.
