Mr Moran replaces Paul Hemming in the chancellor’s role, which he takes up next month.

New ranking from Times Higher Ed

Times Higher Education (THE) has launched yet another ranking. This time it’s an “impact ranking” which will indicate how well universities are helping their communities progress toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Data collection for the new ranking will begin shortly with a pilot edition planned to be launched in April next year.

It will include metrics based on the 11 UN goals, including goal 4 which is quality education, goal 5 which is gender equality, goal 9 which is industry, innovation and infrastructure, and goal 17 which is partnerships. THE plans that the new ranking will be subject to ongoing discussion and, in the long term, will recognise universities’ performance against all 17 goals

THE’s editorial director of global rankings Phil Baty acknowledged that it was a “highly challenging area of data collection” but added that it was “an important and necessary step forward”.

“It’s an area we’ve been exploring and consulting on for many years and takes us well beyond traditional rankings parameters of research and reputation. This is an opportunity to highlight impactful work that often goes unrecognized and undocumented,” he said.

Mr Baty encouraged people to get in touch and be part of the discussions about the new ranking.
