In today’s Higher Ed Daily Brief: QS young uni rankings, unfathomable award, AIB’s milestone

QS young universities

Another day, and yet another ranking of the world’s top universities under 50 years old. This time it’s from QS, seeking to milk yet another round of publicity from its annual ranking of all universities which was released a fortnight ago. Once they filter the list to universities less than 50 years old, it turns out that Australia has 10 universities in the top 50. They are UTS (10th), University of Wollongong (16th), Queensland University of Technology (19th), Curtin University (20th), RMIT (21st), University of South Australia (25th), Deakin University (31st), Griffith University (35th), James Cook University (43rd) and Swinburne University (45th). Make of that what you will.

Unthinkable outcome

This can’t go unremarked. The University of Sydney’s “Unlearn” marketing campaign has won not only a gold accolade from the US-based Council for Advancement and Support of Education, but was the only Australian university to win a grand gold. It’s unfathomable.

Unusually, the university was not trumpeting this triumph. After the ridicule it endured from the uninformed when it launched the campaign last year, this week’s win was celebrated with a media unrelease. But, unfortunately, the whole saga is unforgettable. If only we could unsee.

10,000th student

Adelaide-based online higher education provider the Australian Institute of Business, has celebrated its 10,000 student completion. The institute has grown to a considerable size and graduated 476 students this week alone. AIB is mainly known for its highly popular MBA. But it also offers a bachelor of business administration, a graduate certificate of management, a graduate diploma of management, a doctor of business administration a master of management and other PhD degrees.
