Twice a Rookie
Flinders University has been named the world’s best school for digital illustration for the second year in a row. It has again won the School of the Year: Digital Illustration title in The Rookies, which are global awards for creative media and entertainment students.
Lecturer Katie Cavanagh said that holding the title for the second year underscored the rigour of the Flinders bachelor of creative arts (visual effects and entertainment design) degree. The degree is run in partnership with CDW Studios whose founder, Simon Scales, said that 93 student works were involved in The Rookies entry. “The scoring takes every one of them into consideration. The overall standard of work from first to third years was incredible,” he said.
Forrest fellows
Three overseas scientists have been awarded prestigious Forrest Research Foundation fellowships to do post doctoral work in Western Australian universities.
Chong Wei, with a PhD from Xiamen University who is currently researching dolphin bioacoustics at the National University of Singapore, will join Curtin University to investigate the effects of underwater noise on marine animals.
Alfred Tiley, an Oxford PhD currently at the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy at Durham University, will explore the properties of star-forming galaxies over the last 10 billion years at the University of Western Australia (UWA).
Marcus Korb, a PhD from Chemnitz University of Technology will also work at UWA on replacing the use of toxic noble metals with cheaper, safer iron catalysts in a range of chemical reactions.
