Curtin Uni awards the first Julia Gillard scholarship

Julia Gillard scholarship awarded

One of Western Australia’s top year 12 students has been selected as the inaugural winner of

the Julia Gillard Women in Leadership Scholarship to study at Curtin University. Orla Latawski, from Perth Modern School, was awarded the scholarship last night. She plans to do a double science and law degree at Curtin University, majoring in psychology.

Ms Latawski was awarded a certificate of merit for her year 12 performance, and completed over 265 hours of community service during school.

The scholarship, name in honour of Australia’s first woman prime minister, is intended to help

academically gifted female students to develop themselves as a leader in their chosen field at Curtin.

Frank Brennan honoured

Well-known social justice campaigner Frank Brennan will be awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity by the University of Divinity. The university says its in recognition of his “sustained and distinguished contribution to social justice and public policy in Australia and internationally as a scholar, widely-published writer, and advocate for change, particularly for issues surrounding law and justice for abuse victims, indigenous Australians, refugees and asylum seekers, and the people of Timor-Leste”.
