Accolade for Bowman

Just before Central Queensland University ’s long serving vice-chancellor Scott Bowman launches himself into retirement he has been honoured by the Institute of Managers and Leaders with the Sir John Storey Outstanding Intentional Leader Award.

The institute says that when Professor Bowman started at CQUniversity as vice-chancellor nearly ten years ago staff morale was low and the university had a poor reputation.

“Over the past decade, Scott has led a process to change CQUniversity to a values-driven organisation which a recent staff survey has shown to be incredibly successful — 95 per cent of staff believe and work towards this culture every day,” the institute said.

“It is one of the few universities in the country with significant growth and a strong performance culture built on our values of engagement, can-do attitude, openness, leadership and inclusiveness.”

By all accounts Professor Bowman now plans to go and sit on a beach, before embarking on a world tour with his wife in a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Deep tech

The federal government’s nuclear science research body ANSTO has launched a new “deep technology” incubator as the first step in developing an innovation precinct around its centre at Lucus Heights in southern Sydney. The incubator will be named “nandin”, a word meaning “to look ahead” in the Dharawal language of the Aboriginal people of the area.

ANSTO chief executive Adi Paterson said the new precinct would “deliver research solutions for industry to enhance innovation, focused on the areas of health, advanced manufacturing, industry, agriculture, food and nutrition”.

“It will position southern Sydney at the heart of innovation in Australia,” he said.
