Bravo Finkel

In one of her first moves as Science Minister, Karen Andrews has made the popular decision to extend the term of chief scientist Alan Finkel by two years until the end of 2020. Dr Finkel — an engineer, scientist, publisher and former chancellor of Monash University — has made the role much more than merely being the federal government’s chief science adviser.

He is also the nation’s chief science advocate, carrying out a tireless round of speeches and engagements, all designed to enhance the understanding of science and promote rational debate about public policy.

Dr Finkel’s predecessor as chief scientist, Ian Chubb, pioneered the public advocacy role for the post. But Dr Finkel has greatly expanded the role, all while conducting major reviews for the government on energy policy and research funding, in addition to his regular work. He is also a strong campaigner for more women to engage in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) education and build STEM careers.

Just think what Dr Finkel will be able to get done in his two extra years in the role.

UNSW’s defence plans

We have more details on UNSW’s proposed new Canberra CDB campus. The university wants to include a defence and security innovation precinct which will plug into the federal government portfolios of education, technology, home affairs, defence and veterans affairs, as well as the spooks in ASIO and the Australian Signals Directorate.

“This planned precinct will open the door to new collaborative opportunities because of the access it will grant to government, global defence industry, R&D organisations, UNSW researchers, partners and students,” said UNSW Canberra’s rector, Michael Frater. “We are inviting members of the defence industry to join us in the precinct and take advantage of this outstanding opportunity.”
