The Gold Coast entrepreneurs and business people will work more closely with university academics and students following the relocation of the region’s innovation hub to the Southern Cross University campus.

The Gold Coast Innovation Hub will move to the university’s campus next to the Gold Coast international airport to link the talent and ideas of SCU faculty and students with the experience and networks of the hub.

“We see tremendous opportunities in being able to access the creative and intellectual capability of the Southern Cross University’s experts and the collective talent of the student body,” said Sharon Hunneybell, CEO of the Gold Coast Innovation Hub.

The hub believes that its co-location with SCU will move it forward in its mission to provide resources and support for start-ups and small businesses to thrive.

SCU vice-chancellor Tyrone Carlin said the university was “excited about the prospect of our next-generation entrepreneurs working with some of the brightest and boldest business innovators on the Gold Coast.”

“We are intensely interested in supporting the local economy in ways which deliver jobs and prosperity,” he said.

The hub’s new premises at the university will lead to joint events between SCU and the hub, beginning with a start-up weekend in June this year.

Mike Ewing, executive dean of the SCU business, law and arts faculty, said having the hub on campus would not only enrich the student experience, but also help prepare students for the workplace.

“We already run a very comprehensive placement program for students, will plans to further enhance it, and this will open even more opportunities, including mentoring and input to student research projects,” Professor Ewing said.

“It will also provide vital research opportunities for academic staff and doctoral students, to work with start-ups and address some of the challenges they face.”

The Gold Coast Innovation Hub is a not-for-profit organisation which was established in 2017.
