La Trobe University has received one of its largest philanthropic donations, $3 million for research into rural and regional health to be carried out at the university’s regional campuses in Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga and Mildura.

The donation comes from the Violet Vines Marshman Charitable Trust, whose purpose is to improve the lives of people living outside the metropolitan area.

The donation will support a chair in rural nursing, a research fellow, scholarships for postgraduate students and opportunities for co-funded, industry-focused PhD degrees.

La Trobe vice-chancellor John Dewar said the gift would fund research to make a difference and help create more healthcare jobs in the bush.

La Trobe won the donation via a competitive process.
