‘Gateway’ schools give a boost for entry to UNSW
Madalyn will get an entry advantage to UNSW because she attends a ‘gateway’ high school.
A fascination with the criminal mind drove Madalyn Hyde to go web shopping for the most suitable course. When she found UNSW Sydney’s bachelor of criminology and criminal justice, as well as a bachelor of psychological science, “I figured out that’s the school I really want to go to”.
Ms Hyde, 17, then discovered that as well as having “amazing stats for students coming out of university into jobs for those degrees”, she was eligible for conditional early entry because she attends St Mary’s Senior High School, one of UNSW’s designated “gateway” schools regarded as disadvantaged.

UNSW’s revamped Gateway Admissions Pathway and Program, approved during the COVID-19 crisis, requires Year 11 and 12 students to provide a portfolio of recent academic assessments and personal statements.
Fearing two months of enforced online learning may have affected her academic performance, Ms Hyde jumped at the chance. “I thought it could take some of the whole ATAR/HSC thing off me to know I have that option available.”
If she receives an offer it will specify the ATAR she will require for her chosen course, which will be substantially lower than the usual one.
