Film and TV’s big night also major for fashion
Hosted by Vogue Australia, the AACTAs’ after-party was the event of the summer, on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
It was the night of nights for Australia’s film and television milieu, and a night for fashion in equal measure. On February 10, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (abbreviated to AACTA) hosted its annual ceremony on the Gold Coast, to honour our best performers, performances, and those who come together to create magic on screen.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an Australian event without temperamental weather; for a moment, the heavens opened outdoors, but not even a monsoonal downpour could pause such a glamorous affair. Cate Blanchett and Margot Robbie were among those in attendance; the former repurposed an Armani Privé dress she’d worn previously into a pantsuit, while the latter continued her winning streak of ‘Barbie’ looks, in a sparkling spring/summer ’98 Vivienne Westwood gown (pink, no less) that set hearts aflutter around the world.
Vogue Australia editor-in-chief Christine Centenera wore the brand of the night, Rabanne, opting for a floral-and-lace dress from the brand’s autumn/winter ’23/’24 collection.
As for the awards themselves, creatives established and emerging were honoured on the night. A24’s Australian horror flick Talk To Me was one of the night’s biggest winners; Danny and Michael Philippou won the award for Best Direction, while its leading star, Sophie Wilde, was honoured as Best Lead Actress. 12-year-old Aswan Reid won the award for Best Lead Actor for his performance in The New Boy, the Cate Blanchett-produced film, while co-star Deborah Mailman, one of Australia’s most beloved performers on screen and stage, nabbed the Supporting Actress honour.
One of the most anticipated events on the annual awards calendar, it wasn’t until afterwards, at the Vogue x Rabanne party, that even more fun kicked off. What makes any good party is an after-party, and for the special event, attendees kicked back in their finery for a night of fun, laughter and champagne. Sparkle was on the radar; Rabanne’s founder, Paco, famously invented metallic chain-mail dresses after showing his first collection 1966, but it was unlikely he could’ve predicted how apt the material would be for nights like these. Several attendees tried their hand at the material, and the corresponding shimmer was visible everywhere.
