Step out for a healthier life
The Australian is teaming up with The Heart Foundation’s Walking Program to show you how to get your free, six-week Personal Walking Plan.
It’s as simple as slipping on your shoes and stepping out the front door, and yet the benefits of walking as exercise are immense.
The Heart Foundation, which has created free Personalised Walking Programs for everyone who chooses to sign up, says walking for half an hour a day can reduce your risk of heart disease by 35 per cent.
But there are other benefits too. You can walk with friends or make connections in the community by meeting new people or getting to know a different place just by using your feet.
The exercise will help you sleep better, as well as reduce stress and fatigue. And there’s no need to rush: start at your own pace and build up to the next level when you are ready.
To help you on the way, and to improve your understanding of the benefits of walking, The Australian is publishing a story a week for six weeks, matching the length of the Heart Foundation’s personalised program.
We hope you step out with purpose, and enjoy reading about all the ways this simple exercise can enhance your life and health.
