The University of Melbourne has made history, appointing leading marine biology professor Emma Johnston as its first-ever female vice-chancellor.

Professor Johnston, currently deputy vice-chancellor of research at the University of Sydney, is an esteemed scientist who has specialised in the impact of humans on marine ecosystems.

The CSIRO director in February will become the university’s 21st vice-chancellor when she succeeds the outgoing vice-chancellor Duncan Maskell, who announced his departure in April.

Announcing the appointment on Monday, Melbourne University chancellor Jane Hansen hailed Professor Johnston’s “passion for the transformation power of research and education” and her “proven track record of leadership excellence”.

“She understands how cross-disciplinary research and teaching unlocks the power and value of a university’s mission, and she shares the university’s focus on equity and student experience,” Ms Hansen said.

“Professor Johnston is one of Australia’s pre-eminent university leaders, has a keen understanding of the issues facing the sector, a profound awareness of the Australian political context, and is a strong advocate and a cogent voice for higher education.”

Professor Johnston grew up in Williamstown and studied at the University of Melbourne before spending 20 years at the University of NSW, where she was the pro vice-chancellor of research and the dean of science.

She is also a chief author of the State of Environment Report for Australia, a former president of Science and Technology Australia, a director at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and a governor of the Ian Potter Foundation.

Professor Johnston was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2018 for her services to higher education and has also been elected a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Professor Johnston said of her latest appointment: “As a sixth-generation Melburnian, raised in Williamstown, I am excited to be coming home for the next chapter of an academic career that in many ways spawned from my childhood curiosity in the wonders of Port Phillip Bay.

“I see the university as a foundation stone for the city, the state and the nation, creating resilient graduates with the know-how and flexibility to support the needs of government, business and community.”
