Malcolm Bligh Turnbull and the ABC. It’s one of the great political love stories of our time.

The latest chapter unfolded just after 8pm on Wednesday during an episode of the game show Hard Quiz. Contestant Hugh, a “tour guide”, picked the Turnbull government (September 2015-August 2018) as his topic du jour.

“When Malcolm Turnbull was voted in, were you old enough to vote?” host Tom Gleeson asked.

“I was 15. Oh, actually, 16,” Hugh replied. “You got that wrong. We’ve not even started the quiz yet,” Gleeson shot back with a smirk. “Doesn’t bode well, does it?” Hugh admitted.

Turnbull’s not the first pollie to get the Gold Logie gotcha treatment from Gleeson;Liberal senator Eric Abetz was on the comedy chopping block last year. So why is the Hawaiian shirt-wearing Hugh such a fan of Mr Harbourside Mansion? Aside from his pitch perfect Christopher Pyne impression and opinion that Greg Hunt is “it a bit of a conservative arse”, it turns out the Insiders stan won the same debating trophy as PM29.

“I think Malcolm Turnbull represents the great grey area of politics,” Hugh said. “Everyone had an opinion. Some were disappointed, for many reasons. A few loved him.”

Gleeson reminded him: “You know you’re at the ABC, yeah? Can you hear the sound of arseholes clenching in the live audience? I’m just saying. Because you’re talking about the Liberal Party being good and they’re like, ‘Oh, hang on, the whole building’s gonna break’.” To which Hugh raised his hand and interjected: “No, no, Tom, the Liberal Party is not good. Am I allowed to say that?” The audience cheered.

“No, you’re not, because that’s biased,” Gleeson said. “But is it OK if you give the opposite opinion?” Hugh asked. Gleeson didn’t hold back: “I’m not gonna say the Labor Party’s good. (BLEEP) hell, have you seen them lately?” It scored the biggest laugh of the night.
