The tall poppy syndrome is alive and well

I have no issue with Anthony Albanese buying a house for $4m plus but I have an issue with the Prime Minister’s justification that he knows how to do it tough (“Buying into trouble: PM’s political judgment on a cliff edge”, 16/10). Try running a business in the current climate. Guaranteed public money with all the perks, wouldn’t we all like that.

Robert Mack, Tuross Head, NSW

The tall poppy syndrome is alive and well in Australia if the negative comments regarding our Prime Minister’s purchase of a $4.3m home are any indication. As a non-Labor voter I congratulate Anthony Albanese and wish him well. He has risen from humble beginnings to the highest office in Australia.

John Yared, Wynnum, Qld

Anthony Albanese’s far-left nemesis in the House of Representatives, Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather, will make mincemeat of the Prime Minister when parliament resumes. Albanese will be accused of being a greedy capitalist taking advantage of negative gearing and capital gains discounts at the expense of young Australians unable to enter the housing market.

Riley Brown, Bondi, NSW

The Prime Minister continually reminds us he grew up in public housing, so nothing really has changed.

Rob Webster, Quirindi, NSW

John Spooner’s cartoon in The Australian clearly shows our Prime Minister’s faith in climate change, rising sea levels and the Australian property market. It’s a trifecta Bob Hawke would be proud of.

Gordon Starke, Subiaco, WA

Anthony Albanese could’ve bought 100 clifftop mansions for the money wasted on the voice. Just saying.

Trevor Farrant, Hackney, SA

I got excited when I heard Albo was buying a house at Copacabana. My hopes were dashed when it was the one on the NSW Central Coast and not the one in Rio de Janeiro.

John Harding, Eastwood, NSW

I have just voted early in the Queensland state election. What with 50 per cent of public transport fares and free lunches for schoolkids, I should have waited. Free haircuts for seniors would have won me over.

David James, Wellington Point, Qld

Janet Albrechtsen quotes Gary Johns as saying, “welcome to country, snippets of language, radical statements endorsing separatism and Disney-like cultural training are not likely to reconcile anyone to anything”. Amen to that.

John Lake, Mosman Park, WA
