Lotus eaters, Elon Musk and the ABC

Profligate and misdirected government expenditure, since the Howard years, has left us not only defenceless but as a land of lotus eaters (“Buckle up for a wild ride as inflation goes viral”, 28/4). Never to be given bad news, never to be asked to tighten our belts, always given handouts. The reality of our shallow, indebted economy is now evident. Sadly, neither of the major parties is fit to govern our country.

I can remember my dear old granny during World War II moaning about everything going up in price. There ain’t anything new under the sun. It’s the same thing happening over and over again.

Roy McKeen, Coombabah, Qld

Any chance of selling the ABC to Elon Musk (“How Elon Musk can liberate Twitter”, 28/4)?

Jennifer Ashton, Gold Coast, Qld

Michael Cunningham (Last Post, 28/4) makes the valid observation that there was nothing resembling a nation when the First Fleet arrived making the term “First Nation” in respect of the Indigenous population inappropriate. The term has been appropriated from the US where it refers to the Native American nations which did exist. We should stop using the term here before another false narrative becomes fixed in our language and history.

Paul Clancy, Tanunda, SA

Hell hath no fury like One Nation scorned (“Hanson to preference Labor in key seats”, 28/4).

George Fishman, Vaucluse, NSW

I’m considering changing my vote because of Katherine Deves (“Women lose out in conflict with transgender rights”, 28/4).

Tony O’Brien, South Melbourne, Vic

It is presumably only a matter of time before able-bodied male athletes who identify as disabled demand the right to compete in the Paralympics, probably in the female competition, to give themselves a better chance.

Peter Davidson, Ashgrove, Qld

Expensive, Jim Campbell (Last Post, 28/4)? Must have been deluxe mince from superior cows. I paid $15 for 1kg.

Roseanne Schneider, Toowoomba, Qld

Look I know we must play by the rules and be diplomatic when dealing with Putin, but why does the West persist in informing him, through the media, of the materiel each Western country is sending to Ukraine (“Wary Berlin to send anti-aircraft guns”, 28/4? Or is that in the rule book too?

Ed Turner, Sinnamon Park, Qld
