Last Post: Emissions, Lib leadership and King of Canada

Chris Bowen says emissions were stable partly due to reduced emissions from industry. That wouldn’t be because industry is shutting down, would it?

“We are turning around a decade of denial and delay, by setting serious climate targets in law,” says Chris Bowen. The genius of this man amazes me.

If ever in the last 80 years we needed to spend more on defence, it is now. Come on, Sussan, start firing some shots!

Alex Cleave, North Fremantle, WA

It might be wrong to underestimate Sussan Ley and her colleagues, but the signs are not encouraging. They should heed the words of Matthew 5:14: Do not hide your light under a bushel. Do not overlook or squander the talent under your nose.

Roseanne Schneider, Toowoomba, Qld

Zoe Daniel showed a distinct lack of grace in conceding her seat to Liberal Party candidate Tim Wilson. Her statement – “we do not seek to divide to win, we do not shelve our ethics or our principles. We do not resort to attack advertising, disinformation, dirty tricks or personal attacks” – demonstrates the Goldstein “mob” got it right.

I hope Richard Marles read the excellent article by Henry Ergas and Alex McDermott at the weekend (“New age of appeasement”, 31/5-1/6). Clearly, as the article points out, there is a close parallel between events of the 1930s and those of today.

Frank Reade, Macquarie, ACT

Richard Marles has discussed security threats with his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth. But we are told next to nothing.

Great piece by Will Swanton on former Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina’s arrival in Australia and form at the French Open. What a champion! Welcome to Australia, Dasha!

Michael Fishpool, Carindale, Qld

I read King Charles’s speech to the Canadian parliament, including the bit in which he said the obligatory “we are gathered on the unceded territory”. Granted, the whole speech was written by people in the Canadian government. But did he not wonder whether, if those words were actually both genuine and truthful – “sovereignty never ceded” – then, ipso facto, he had no moral right to be there as King?
