Last Post: ‘Unwelcome to country’ not fit for a king

The King was welcomed to this country with an Indigenous ceremony. Then he was told he wasn’t welcome by “senator” Lidia Thorpe. I hope the King was suitably briefed about the division in this country before he arrived.

Peter Cranage, Bonython, ACT

The behaviour of Lidia Thorpe at the Australian War Memorial and at the Great Hall of Parliament House during the King’s visit was disgraceful. While she is well known for her activism, to insult him in the way she did was unforgivable.

John George, Terrigal, NSW

Senator Lidia Thorpe disgraced herself and Australia with her rant. It seems she gave an “Unwelcome to Country”. It is time Thorpe left Parliament House. She does nothing to advance her own causes or for Indigenous people with her anger and ranting.

Stuart Davie, Corowa, NSW

Concerning the ACT election outcome: surely it’s oxymoronic for young, healthy Canberra progressives to welcome the survival of a geriatric minority Labor government, exhibiting extreme hardening of its political arteries.

Helen Jackson, Higgins, ACT

The ACT election confirms that Canberra is a city that borders a foreign country called Australia.

Shaun Miller, Prahran, Vic

While Gaza remains a more intractable issue, settlement of the Lebanon conflict is at hand. Israel will agree to a ceasefire on the implementation of the provisions of UN Resolution 1701 where an armament-free zone is established on the border with Lebanon and Hezbollah is disarmed. What could be simpler to enable peace than for the UN to enforce its resolution? Otherwise, why bother with the UN?

Colin Agnew, Nedlands, WA

With a tsunami of old age about to hit Australia, one wonders how our aged-care system will cope. The omens do not augur confidence.

Ken Moore, Chapel Hill, Qld

So Yahya Sinwar has been described as a legendary figure at a recent Sydney rally? Given his fondness for underground tunnel complexes, the Minotaur must be the legend in question.

Patrick Ball, Fern Tree, Tas

The PM would be wise to reconsider; in a two-horse race he might find that coming down the straight most punters will be barracking for arrogance over incompetence.

John Dorman, Toowoomba, Qld

Why should the Qantas shareholders be penalised for the misdemeanours of managers?

Philip Squire, Ashgrove, Qld
