Last Post: Three-eyed fish, fires and powerlines, Mundine and Lidia

Having a sense of humour, I was quite amused at Labor’s three-eyed fish cartoon the first time around. But with the three-eyed inflatable fish at Peter Dutton’s rally in the Chisholm electorate at the weekend I now realise it must be Labor and friends’ official and only argument against nuclear power. Who in the government is mature enough to debate the topic like an adult? Someone? Anyone?

The political problem with older Australians is that many retain good memories. Our taxpayer-supported CSIRO once worked on feasible and safe disposal of nuclear waste. We have been producing nuclear waste for nearly 70 years from essential health treatments and investigations.

It was interesting to hear President Joe Biden comment on the devastating fires in Los Angeles and lay a significant proportion of the blame for igniting hundreds of fires on high-voltage overhead powerlines. The great minds who run Australia are planning 10,000km of new transmission lines to support renewable projects, all passing through increasingly high-risk rural land, hills, forests and now outer suburban areas. This is surely a recipe for future disaster. Wake up, Australia, and learn by the mistakes that are being laid bare by others

In an otherwise convincing article, Nick Cater describes climate activists as “average people” (“Cold, hard energy lessons in Britain’s grim winter’s tale”, 13/1). That is surely a compliment that few, if any of them, deserve.

Helen Jackson, Higgins, ACT

Warren Mundine would be recognised by sight and policy position by more than 90 per cent of the electors of Bradfield. His opponent, Gisele Kapterian, on the other hand, would be recognised by maybe 1 per cent. Is this to be a merit selection or a DEI or quota battle? Why would one vote for a teal-lite when you could vote for the real thing? Reminds me of my time in the Socialist Left in the 1960s and ’70s when a factional win was more important than an electoral win.

As the phrase “from the river to the sea” is a call for genocide against the non-Arab people of Israel, should anybody using it in Australia be immediately arrested and later fined or jailed?

Patrick Cobham, Palmwoods, Qld

Senator Lidia Thorpe has been quiet for a while. Makes one wonder what she is planning next.
