Last Post: Tanya in charge, shifting Invasion Day and more ‘division’

Has The Oz obtained a scoop? Reading between the lines Tanya Plibersek could be construed as ready to stand for the Labor leadership (Last year’s heroes deserve better for their sacrifice”, 28/1)? Nothing in any other news outlet.

Neville Wright, Kilcunda, Vic

Memo to Tanya: if you want to win the next election appoint Joel as your energy minister and pledge to build two new baseload power stations, one in the Hunter and the other in Central Queensland (“Albanese sacrifices Labor mate as Plibersek pushes her own vision”, 28/1). You’d win in a sense-slide!

Norris Lewis, Toowong, Qld

As Darryl Kerrigan would say: tell Tanya she’s dreamin’! The Morrison government has pulled us through magnificently.

John Bicknell, Bargo, NSW

Mark Butler knows more about the politics of climate change than anyone else in the Labor Party. He has written a book on it. So what does the party do? Shift him sideways. Another example of short-term ambition trumping long-term survival.

George Carrard, Oatley, NSW

With summer half over and the school holidays finishing, now Ms Palaszczuk wants tourists to come to Queensland (“Tourism pins hopes on open borders”, 28/1). Is this some sort of joke?

Steve Finlay, Leongatha, Vic

I can’t help but wonder — if Australia Day is moved to another date, will Invasion Day be stopped or changed as well? It’s always a little puzzling that on Australia Day we have one group giving a “welcome to country” ceremony, while another group marches in protest.

Angela Verdenius, Geraldton, WA

Many people have expressed puzzlement regarding Margaret Court’s Australia Day upgrade. Relax folks, nothing sinister: it’s simply in appreciation of the fact she never once indulged in grunting while serving or hitting the ball.

Maris Dabars, Murray Bridge, SA

Geoff Phillips’ claim that the LGBTQ crowd are bigots too for being intolerant of Margaret Court is Orwellian doublespeak (Last Post, 28/01). A bigot is a person obstinately prejudiced against others on the basis of their identity. Court’s condemnation of gay people comes from who they are, while her critics object only to her hurtful opinions.

Han Yang, North Turramurra, NSW

“Divisive” seems to be the word of the month. Democracy is divisive, always was always will be.

Robert Buczma, Randwick, NSW
