Last Post: Sir Humphrey, the Premier and Trump’s new justice

One wonders which head will roll next in Victoria. The historic figure of Robespierre comes to mind. He started the Reign of Terror and his very head ended the Terror.

Pastor de Lasala, Seaforth, NSW

Those ministers and bureaucrats who had difficulty identifying who was responsible for the Great Victorian Quarantine Hotel fiasco might have found it helpful to borrow these words from Sir Humphrey Appleby on how to obfuscate while giving the appearance of owning up: “The identity of the official, whose alleged responsibility for the hypothetical oversight that has been the subject of recent discussion, is not shrouded in quite such impenetrable obscurity as certain previous disclosures have led you to assume. The individual in question is, it may surprise you to learn, one whom your present interlocutor is in the habit of defining by means of the perpendicular pronoun.”

C. Lloyd-Bostock, Connellys Marsh, Tas

It’s a shame we can’t reassemble the crew and cast of Yes Minister. There’s enough material available in Victoria for at least one new season.

John Mcharg, Maylands, WA

When I worked in the NT public sector we promoted a culture of “muck up, fess up, fix up”. The Victorian public sector could do with a similar culture.

Ken Clarke, Tweed Heads, NSW

The Coate inquiry, if nothing else, has starkly revealed the appalling quality of the generously paid people occupying senior positions in the Victorian public service.

Dennis Walker, North Melbourne, Vic

Three contracts totalling $130 million were awarded to security guards. Unless these were done on a handshake, there will be copies of the contracts. Who signed them?

Michael Liles, Olinda, Vic

Recall, if you will, Daniel Andrews’ press conference at which he stated he was so “totally focused on COVID-19” that he couldn’t/wouldn’t answer reporter questions on other important matters. How does his supposed laser focus on the virus fit with his lack of knowledge?

Gordon Batt, Terrigal, NSW

“I do not recall” — the new slogan for Victorian licence plates?

Tim Watkins, Brisbane, Qld

Whatever one thinks of the politics surrounding the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court, why is it when announcing her nomination almost all media commentators introduce her as “a mother of seven”? She is being nominated for her judicial expertise. Regrettably, another example of the stereotypical representation of women in the workforce.

Angela Kueter-Luks, Bruce, ACT
