Last Post: Sea Eagles, jerseys and the irony of ‘inclusiveness’

I was pleased to see the photograph of Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton on the front page of The Australian on Tuesday. Over the past few years it has become easy to forget that our parliament is made up of real people. Nice to see a genuine greeting between the leaders. Australia needs this.

Richard Brasher, Willoughby East, NSW

Let me get this straight. The Manly Sea Eagles club is endeavouring to foster diversity and inclusion by excluding seven players who choose to exercise freedom of thought and expression. Sounds much like fundamentalist intolerance to me.

John McLeod, Maroochydore, Qld

Manly should print a small photo of the Pope on its players’ left sleeve. Same issue.

Peter Condon, Southport, Qld

Manly wants its players to wear a jersey “celebrating diversity and inclusivity” but forgets to consult the players. Very inclusive.

Trevor Pedler, Attadale, WA

The PM has no place commenting on the jersey controversy. Every player has a right to express his stance on the matter.

Fran Durand, St Ives, NSW

Institutions like the Manly club, the ABC and so on should remember a sizeable percentage of the electorate voted against same-sex marriage and all that it entails.

Chris Johnston, Palmyra, WA

Congratulations to the seven-plus football players for standing up for what they believe in. That is their right.

G. Healey, Perth, Tas

It is bad enough the federal government has sidelined our national flag, but now the new American ambassador displays flags other than her nation’s and the Australian flag. One wonders what the US reaction would be if our ambassador displayed a Native American flag when speaking to the media.

Geoff Bushby, Milsons Pt, NSW

One thing is for sure: if voters don’t know what to expect and vote against the voice, there will be an immediate outcry of “Australia is a racist country”.

Elizabeth Moser, Newtown, Vic

I am fascinated by references to the “failed” 1999 republic referendum. Surely a referendum can neither fail nor succeed but merely reveal the view of all our citizens?
