Last Post: Rationed health care in the age of Omicron

For weeks we have had to endure endless TV “news” clips of needles being jabbed into people’s arms. Now we have to put up with shots of things being shoved up everyone’s noses. Why can’t they tear their hair or scratch their armpits? Anything’s better than this

Scott Morrison is not showing us how to live with Covid, but rather gaslighting Australians about the depth of the crisis we face. Testing and health care is already rationed and the latest, narrow definition of a close contact is necessary to enable exposed and infectious people to keep working so the country doesn’t grind to a halt.

William Pike, one of the finest jockeys ever seen in this country, might choose to walk away from horse racing. The reason? He has decided against vaccination. As it is the victors who write history – in this case, the perpetrators of herd coercion – how soon will Pike be obliterated from the official records? Another casualty of the ongoing demise of liberty.

Those vandals who set fire to the doors of Old Parliament House should reflect on the punishment meted out to Guy Fawkes, who attempted to blow up the houses of parliament in 1605. He was hanged, drawn and quartered. Democracy is taken seriously

When I think of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, I am reminded of a quote attributed to him: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” An extraordinary figure whose contribution to the ultimately successful fight against apartheid in his homeland, South Africa, cannot be underestimated.

Bill Noonan, 1970s rugby league player and prop for the Berries (Canterbury-Bankstown). A true legend. Played hard, done fine. RIP Bill. You will be fondly remembered.

The Americans are doing naval/military exercises in the Black Sea. They have shorelines on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Imagine the outrage if Russia sent its navy to undertake such exercises in the Caribbean or on the US coastline?

It was enormously comforting to start the new year with the letters page in The Weekend Australian. Congratulations to the contributors. Such a relief to see that good people get it and The Australian prints it.
