Last Post: Panama Canal is no laughing matter for Trump

I don’t care what anybody says about the US president-elect. He has taken stand-up comedy to a whole new level. A real laugh (“Snowball’s chance in hell, says Trudeau”, 9/1).

Gary Frances, Bexley, NSW

If US president-elect Trump makes a Putin-like invasion of Greenland, currently a territory of Denmark, a NATO country, would we be motivated to join with “Aussie” Queen Mary’s country to repel this invader, by military force, the impounding of assets, or by other financial sanctions? Or, under AUKUS, are we now obligated to participate in any future Operation Desert Snow Storm?

Garry P. Dalrymple, Earlwood, NSW

Donald Trump says the canal was sold to Panama for $1 and now wants it back. Given the ravages of inflation, will it cost $10 to buy it back?

Thos Puckett, Ashgrove, Qld

Is it a revival of colonialism by incoming US president Donald Bonaparte, with claims on Greenland and Canada, or, alternatively, is it a Pythonesque interpretation of Camelot?

Kenneth Gregson, Swansea, Tas

China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. North Korea wants South Korea. Why shouldn’t the US want Greenland? Fair’s fair.

Peter Sesterka, Hawker, ACT

Canadians may well bemoan how Justin Trudeau’s policies have resulted in high unsustainable immigration, cost-of-living pressures, unaffordable housing and climate change as well as woke programs targeting diversity, equity and inclusion but who repeatedly voted him into power? Yep, the Canadian voters. Yet, we have Victorian voters who complain about Daniel Andrews’s disastrous term in office.

Jeffrey Smith, Cannington, WA

The cancellation of world championship ice hockey matches, using threats of violence as an excuse, is akin to paying ransom to kidnappers.

Geoff Phillips, The Falls, Qld

WA Premier Roger Cook showed his true priorities (“Cook poll dances to his own tune”, 9/1) when he said, “I’ve got an election to win, so that’s my focus”. Unsurprisingly, Cook puts his political survival ahead of meeting the needs of Western Australians.

Roy Stall, Mount Claremont, WA

Jim Chalmers’s CPI response has more spin than a Shane Warne over (“Government is running out of time on sticky inflation”, Editorial, 9/1).

Peter Clarke, Corinda, Qld
