Last Post: No Konstas fireworks, holiday Joe, Victorian Libs and ugly transmission lines

I was looking forward to some fireworks by Sam Konstas on Sunday. It looks like I’ll have to wait until New Year’s Eve.

Michael Afaras, Henley, NSW

The crackle of the Konstas bat has now joined the noise of cicadas in the sounds of the Australian summer.

Geoff Davey, St Lucia, Qld

It’s not that President Joe Biden really means to take so many holidays, it’s more he confuses work days with vacation. Plus, beaches are so much more relaxing, with almost zero stairs to manage.

Rosemary O’Brien, Ashfield, NSW

Having come to this country 50 years ago as a migrant wanting to improve my lifestyle, I must wholeheartedly agree with Angela Shanahan (“Cheer up, Aussies, we’re in the best country on Earth”, 28-29/12). No wars, ample resources, a stable government and a booming economy. Why we have such a high level of youth suicide, I cannot imagine.

John Clark, Moss Vale, NSW

If only Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong would read Gemma Tognini’s article and weep – as I did.

Susan Watson, Claremont, WA

Former professional tennis player Sam Groth is appointed deputy Liberal leader in Victoria. Let’s hope he serves it up to the current state government.

David Nankiville, Brighton, Vic

I fear we haven’t heard the last of the cricket metaphors relating to the new Victoria Premier (“Feds to Victorian Liberals: start Battin and quit fighting”, 28-29/12).

Roseanne Schneider, Toowoomba, Qld

Ugly transmission line and wind towers are blighting the landscape and the natural beauty of the countryside. It would appear those who most support these projects don’t live in their shadow and have them intruding into their lives.

Bruce Collison, Banks, ACT

Loved Steve Waterson’s Last Word column in Review. More than a hint of Johannes Leak. But promise me one thing, Steve: you won’t retire or die before I do.

John Sumner, Deviot, Tas

I wish that in 2025 freedom of speech returns in civilised societies, that we learn again to disagree if we choose. And that we will learn again to defend their right to have their own view on the issues in the society in which we live. That is, that we may again contest shibboleths in a civilised manner and have a great new year.

Ron Robinson, Little Mountain, Qld
