Just when the Liberals finally get a real Liberal as leader for the first time in over seven years, the Nationals have gone in the other direction. It’s astonishing. Just as Malcolm Turnbull was a Liberal by convenience rather than conviction, David Littleproud comes across as yet another politician who would be happy to take a safe seat from any party that offered it to him.

“Slow response!” is the cry regarding the murder of a score of youngsters in the US. But that is just perfectly in keeping with the culturally traditional “slow response” to gun control.

As Paul Dibb writes, an ailing Vladimir Putin probably sees his place in history as a restorer of Russia to a global power (“Humiliated and weakened, Putin more dangerous”, 30/5). I would think he will be remembered not as Vladimir the Great, but Vlad the Impaler.
