Last Post: Matildas fight back from the brink!

The Matildas inspired our nation, coming back from the brink to succeed with true-blue grit and determination. Forget rugby!

Lutz Wolf, Auchenflower, Qld

The Matildas remind me of the Australia II crew who won the America’s Cup in 1983. They have the same pride, skill and tenacity. And the winged keel hasn’t been used yet. Maybe they can get John Bertrand to have a word as well.

Stephen Edwards, Cowaramup, WA

I would like to endorse Kevin Burke’s sentiments on his experience at his Icon Cancer Centre (Letters, 1/8). As a regular patient at Icon Townsville for more than six years, I can attest to the whole team’s professional and caring performance. While I don’t have the bell to look forward to, I can honestly say I enjoy going there.

Steve Wiblin, Hermit Park, Qld

With the umpire’s decision to influence the outcome of the fifth Test with a new for old ball, it’s no wonder the expression “It’s not cricket” is no longer applied to unsportsmanlike behaviour.

John Lake, Mosman Park, WA

Vy Lingham’s letter (Last Post, 1/8) about Anthony Albanese’s bosom pals – the Greens and a threatened double dissolution – brings to mind that well-known saying (possibly of American origin): when a fight is in the offing, bring it on.

Michael Lynch-Gardner, Daleys Pt, NSW

Bob Bennett (Last Post, 1/8) suggests we could benefit from a minister for unintended consequences or for collateral damage. Given that we already benefit from the blurred efforts of 65 federal ministers and assistant ministers, perhaps we need a minister for the reduction of ministries.

John Colebatch, Kelso, NSW

I do wonder how the Labor government would react if, in response to its same job, same pay dispute, industry decided in peak production times to not employ additional staff, which would lower the amount of tax they pay.

LM Silbert, West Leederville, WA

If we are addressing bad grammar, my favourite is the response to “how are you?”, which most commonly is, “I’m good”. Well, I don’t doubt you are good, but the correct response is “I’m well.”

George Fishman, Vaucluse, NSW

Emma Covacevich, please, Barbie is just a movie (“ ‘Women in, men out’: Legal firm Clayton Utz’s strategy for gender parity”, 1/8). It’s not a blueprint to lead a law firm.

Jill Elias, Dalkeith, WA
