Polls are showing that voters as short-sighted.

I cannot believe the polls. Scott Morrison is out there promoting the Coalition’s policies while Bill Shorten seems to be playing catch-up. A Labor win would mean disaster for the country and yet short-sighted voters won’t recognise the good work being done by Morrison.

Julian Burnside says he is a very different person to what he was 40 years ago (“Burnside savaged for his 40-year ties to men-only club”, 11/3). As he is only now just resigning his Savage Club membership, what he should have said is he is a different person to what he was last week.

Riley Brown, Bondi Beach, NSW

I suppose it is reasonable to assume that the Greens candidate for Kooyong has applied for membership of the Alexandra Club.

Simon Gamble, Noosa Heads, Qld

Julian Burnside need have no fear that his lapse of memory about his time as a member of the Savage Club will impede his progress. He can take comfort from the fact that for Greens, truth is a non-binding bourgeois concept and is of value only insofar as it advances progressive causes.

Frank Pulsford, Aspley, Qld

I congratulate Celia Hammond. She will be the fifth member for Curtin (I was the second).

Victor Garland, Claremont, WA

Despite a record that includes being a staunch Catholic who values tradition, family, men and motherhood, Celia Hammond has won Liberal preselection for Curtin — a famous victory with so much lead in her saddlebags.

Terry Birchley, Bundaberg, Qld

In answer to Tony Hennessy (Last Post, 11/3), if my backyard had sufficient space, access and geology, I would be happy to lease it for nuclear waste disposal. But I live in a congested suburb. One of my colleagues in England, an expert on radiation protection, has announced he would welcome the radioactive decay to heat his home in winter.

Don Higson, Paddington, NSW

Reprocessed uranium has half the life of some plastics. Nano particles will be around for thousands of years. Plastic disposal is unregulated unlike reprocessed uranium. I would not bury plastic in my backyard, just as some of your readers would not bury uranium in their backyard.

Peter Lauricella, Beerwah, Qld

Bravo, Salvatore Babones (“Diverse but not divided”, 11/3). Most migrants know that English, education and the mainstream is the way to get ahead. It’s a no-brainer to embrace English fluency, Western values and assimilate. No one’s stopping ethnic groups from enjoying their festivals and traditions.

Arthur Giannopoulos, Mitcham, SA
