Last Post: Liberal preselection hopes for women teals, a politics-first emissions approach and a Pacific ‘Munich’
As Peta Credlin acknowledges (“How to woo back the women’s vote”, 14/7), the successful teal independents were highly accomplished women representative of their previously Liberal voting communities. Perhaps the most meaningful evaluation of the Liberal Party’s so-called merit-based preselection process is to question whether these female candidates would have had any hope of gaining Liberal preselection in their electorates and, if not, why not.

Employees who claim they can work productively from home should be careful what they wish for – employers might outsource their jobs to low-wage countries.

As our fearless leader takes selfies with his socialist mates on his climate-change junket, homelessness is at a high, including for people who do work but can’t afford the high rents and unrealistic house prices. When are we going to get a political party that puts Australians first instead of throwing our tax money at the rest of the world?

Protecting Australians’ health and wellbeing from Covid was said to be worth every restriction, financial cost, forced lockdowns and mandates, but protecting the country, its economy and our financial future from the current possibility of foot-and-mouth disease taking hold is not worth introducing any safeguards?

Graham Richardson’s defence of John Barilaro in particular and politicians in general may have a point but it misses the main point: the offer of the New York job to a non-politician was withdrawn with a politician as the beneficiary (“Big Apple is low-hanging fruit for scandal-hungry”, 15/7).

One main purpose of our adopting reduced carbon dioxide emissions is political – to align us with the proposed policies of most other nations. Thus as the elected ALP government’s lower reductions in emissions are more likely achievable, are less costly than those of the Greens and would be about in line with likely actual global results (which will probably be less than those promised), then the ALP policy will suffice.

Why is Albanese taking assurances from Sogavare that there would be no Chinese base in Solomon Islands reminiscent of Neville Chamberlain?
