Last Post: Leak’s Wong cartoon speaks more than pages of words

The latest Newspoll heralds election disaster for Anthony Albanese (“Voters’ summer of discontent”, 27/1). The bigger disaster awaiting taxpayers is how much of their money Albanese will invest in his political lifebuoy.

Michael Saul, Scarborough, Qld

Johannes Leak’s brilliant cartoon on the Auschwitz memorial speaks more than pages of words. Selecting Penny Wong to represent Australia was the latest in a long series of decisions displaying poor judgment. Time for a nickname reset from Each Way Albo to Wrong Way Albo.

John McLeod, Sunshine Coast, Qld

Thank you, Johannes Leak, for your very strong cartoon excoriating Penny Wong as Australia’s representative at the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

There would be very few Jews or other Australians who wouldn’t find Wong’s views Israel-phobic. The descendants of those who perished in the camps and who found safe haven in the West and in Israel would certainly rather she had not been there.

Gordon Starke, Subiaco, WA

So pleased was I with Monday’s cartoon that I told my wife I’d place a copy on the fridge door. Infuriated, she cried: “I’m not having that woman in my home!”

Ian McHugh, Balwyn North, Vic

Perhaps the Governor-General should have attended the 80-year commemoration of Auschwitz while the politicians stayed at home.

Joanna Wriedt, Eaglemont, Vic

Anthony Albanese’s announcement of funding for Holocaust museums: a too little, too late vote-buying exercise added to the national credit card debt to be paid by future generations.

Mark Allison, Ascot, WA

The NSW memorial to police who died in the line of duty has been daubed with the words “Dogs” and “Evil”. I would like to take a charitable view of the authors of this act of vandalism by assuming that they are describing themselves rather than fallen cops.

Terry Davis, Lindfield, NSW

Name and shame the perpetrators defacing our monuments. They should be made to clean/repair them wearing a printed T-shirt stating their crime.

Kate Adams, Roseville, NSW

I, too, congratulate the selection of Josh Frydenberg as The Australian’s Australian of the Year. What were the voters of Kooyong thinking when they cast their votes at the last federal election?

Simon Gamble, Noosa Heads, Qld
