Last Post: Keeping it real: Gladys, Dan, Donald and Annastacia
In the past few weeks we have learned that one premier freezes out people who are no longer useful to him, or ditches them when a scapegoat is required, while another lends a sympathetic ear to a disgraced former colleague, her friend. I know which version of human being I prefer.

Je suis Gladys.

Spot on, Janet Albrechtsen (“Why Berejiklian should stand firm in this affair”, 17-18/10). We will have lost our way if Gladys goes. Punish behaviours that are truly detrimental and let good people get on with their job.

In her appraisal of Gladys’s predicament, Janet Albrechtsen said politics was a “wasteland of mediocrity”. If Jim Killen were alive he would probably have described Gladys as “a daffodil in a field of Bathurst burrs”.

Chin up, Gladys. Choices are what we make, but it’s the outcomes that really define us.

Peter Van Onselen’s analysis of Donald Trump’s character may be correct yet I’d rather have him a heartbeat away from the “red button” than Joe Biden, who cannot remember for which office he is a candidate (“For decency sake, Trump must not be returned”, 17-18/10).

Massachusetts population: 6.9m. Cases yesterday: 767. Deaths so far: 9702. Victorian population: 6.36m. Cases yesterday: 2. Deaths so far: 816. Draw your own conclusions.

How eloquently Henry Ergas writes in saying the Victorian public sector must have “the commitment to truth finding, without which truth and truthfulness cannot survive” ( “A tale of two crises”, 16/10). One hopes the extraordinary sitting of the Victorian hotel quarantine inquiry this week heeds Ergas’s words.

Daryl Maguire “sold” illegal visas. Will the purchasers be sent back to their country of origin? If not, why not? Others entering the country illegally have faced the same fate.

In his report “Queensland ALP regains poll lead” (17-18/10), Jamie Walker concludes Labor Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk “will stay”. Regardless of political persuasion, I just wish Queenslanders would elect someone whose name is easier to spell and pronounce. Alas, “Frecklington” is not much better.
