The far Right and the far Left should both be unacceptable.

Why is it acceptable that far Right attitudes are considered abhorrent and yet Stalinist and Maoist attitudes of the Left are somehow acceptable? The inhumane butchery promoted by one is matched by the inhumane perversity of the other. Beware of the selective reading of history.

While I deplore the demonstration at St Kilda by neo-Nazis and the ill-considered presence of independent senator Fraser Anning, I find words by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young hypocritical. Ten years ago, a demo was held in Melbourne by the Australian Friends of Palestine at which Hanson-Young made an impassioned speech in their support. On show at this demonstration were anti-Semitic placards depicting swastikas.

Jon Kudelka’s cartoon on the Queensland senator’s visit to a far Right rally in Melbourne is a breath of fresh air (7/1). He is not afraid to attack both sides of the divide.

I believe Fraser Anning when he says he is “a supporter of the Jewish community, always have been and particularly the Israelis”. But who cares? Anning is an aberration. He gained his Senate seat after winning a ridiculous 19 votes and following the May elections will be no more.

It’s too late to worry (“Red light flashing over fuel security”, 7/1), but one of the reasons for the introduction of the motor manufacturing industry after World War II was to make us less dependent on imports.

Norm Neill, Darlinghurst, NSW

The revelations highlighting our lack of sufficient fuel reserves should our supply lines be disrupted is unacceptable given our isolation and lack of industry to ensure independence. Factoring in stocks held overseas and not on our shores is another example of incompetence by those responsible.

Mike Flanigan, Toowoomba, Qld

Ross Fitzgerald’s (“Labor’s policy gift to Coalition”, 7/1) call for the Morrison Coalition to seek victory by attacking the Labor Party’s policies misses a key point: the Morrison government has yet to provide voters with its own vision for Australia’s future. Simply attacking Labor is not enough.

Peter Smith, Lake Illawarra, NSW

Australian cricket will take some time to regain balance and good performance. Despite brave faces, our cricketers are ashamed of their dishonesty and, like wood borer, it eats away inside. It will pass when all of them within themselves, accept their roles and are then able to re-enter the joy of cricket.
