Last Post: Holes in defence, senator’s ambition and political standards

So Defence has produced yet another lemon (“Hunter frigates now the hunted”, 13/6). This is a disgrace and senior officers, if they had any honour, would resign; however, they only seem interested in hanging on to their medals, not the defence of Australia.

Iain Rae, Palmwoods, Qld

Cameron Stewart’s analogy likening the lack of investigation into whether the new frigate design offered taxpayers good value for money to Fawlty Towers falls short. Instead, it appears to resemble the bureaucratic satire of Yes Minister.

I have sometimes wondered about the location of Troy Bramston’s thoughts on the political and social spectrums (“British economy, politics suffer slow poison of Brexit”, 13/6). His description of Nigel Farage as a “xenophobic rabble-rousing fool” seems to confirm what I had suspected.

David Morrison, Springwood, NSW

Senator Gallagher’s obfuscation on the Higgins matter mirrors her approach in 2017 when her citizenship status was questioned. The judgment of her colleagues is questionable, or perhaps the government thinks the Gallagher problem is easier to solve than the cost of living.

Robert Mills, Belrose, NSW

Katy Gallagher fancies herself as one day becoming prime minister and knows she faces strong competition from Tanya Plibersek and several male Labor MPs. For her to stand aside would be the end of that aspiration.

Peter D. Surkitt, Sandringham, Vic

With Boris Johnson resigning over a cake and Nicola Sturgeon arrested (then released), the Albanese government seems the model of rectitude and stability.

Roseanne Schneider, Toowoomba, Qld

Johannes Leak’s cartoon perfectly summarises the attitude of Mr Bowen and others, that in order to save the planet, we must first destroy it.

John Murray, West End, Qld

It is laudable that in the ongoing voice debate, Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney plans to emphasise ideas such as reforming work-for-the-dole and building more housing on homelands. However, it is difficult to see why such a profound constitutional change is needed to make these ideas a reality.
