Last Post: Harry and Meghan and the lack of a good word to say about them

To Pat Cannard (Letters, 13/12), who asks if there is anyone out there with a good word to say about Harry and Meghan: the simple answer is no.

Jennie Bowles, Brighton East, Vic

I have two excellent words, Pat Cannard, to say about Harry and Meghan. The second one is off and the first one is not printable in a family newspaper.

Peter West, Aveley, WA

Perhaps the reason your correspondent has yet to find a pleasant word said or written about the Sussexes is that this privileged pair chose to turn their backs on Britain, retreated to the US where they could enjoy privilege without responsibility, then sought to denigrate the hardworking royal family, even stooping so low as to poke fun at the recently deceased monarch. Their previous position in that family is misused to make even further wealth for themselves by criticising family members and painting themselves as virtuous victims. Hard to like, really; and impossible to respect.

Robin Southey, Port Fairy, Vic

Not forgetting, of course, John Bell (Last Post, 13/12), the constant subtle and often not so subtle jersey pulling that is a constant of the round ball code that goes largely unpunished.

Richard Bramley, Taringa, Qld

To remove any doubt for both Ross McDonald (Last Post, 12/12) and Kate Foot (Last Post, 13/12) who have noted the wide divergence of attitudes of letter writers to the SMH and The Australian, anyone in Sydney truly is on another planet. And then there is planet Melbourne. Believe me, as one looking on from the outer regions.

Geoff Ellis, Smithfield, Qld

Do letter writers espouse the views of their newspaper? Or is the opposite true; that their views determine their choice of newspaper?

Geoff Phillips, The Falls, Qld

A word of advice to Chris Bowen. When you are in a hole, stop digging.

Peter Whitehurst, Swan View, WA

Shares in mining stocks have dropped because the feds have intervened in the price of coal and gas for domestic power. Surely shareholders can now expect compensation for the drop in income. That will keep the new progressive economy humming along until we all disappear into an economic vortex, which is where the state of Victoria is quickly heading.

Murray Horne, Cressy, Vic

Let’s see how well Labor navigates the new wave of Covid that is surging in aged-care facilities now that the shoe is on the other foot.

George Fishman, Vaucluse, NSW
