Juggling the baby and the briefcase is not easy

I arrived in Broken Hill as a 21-year-old migrant many years ago and was not allowed to work by the unions because I was a married woman. They wanted the jobs kept for single women so they would stay in the town. Perhaps I was lucky as I stayed at home, had children and enjoyed bringing them up. I did not enter the workforce until the children were older. Now I watch my clever granddaughters trying to balance what Jordan Peterson calls “the baby and the briefcase” (“Life, romance and relationships, the Jordan Peterson way”, 26/2).

Isn't there something patently stupid about inviting a deep-thinking clinical psychologist such as Jordan Peterson on to Q&A, asking him complex historical and philosophical questions, and then requiring him to answer within 60 seconds? The ABC at its absolute best.

As well as upsetting the inner suburban disciples of political correctness and virtue identity with his plain commonsense, Jordan Peterson will have the vegans among them regurgitating their kale salads with the revelation that his diet is all-meat. Could this man be more perfect for the time?

When the Prime Minister feels obliged to say “fair dinkum” three times in his press statement about Snowy 2.0 it does not exactly fill me with confidence about the scheme. Perhaps he could spend the money on some more immediately accessible renewables, such as storage batteries for solar power.

Helen Scheller, Benalla, Vic

Wait, what? Ita Buttrose for ABC chair? But, she’s a woman. Michelle Guthrie was a woman. So, it’s a man’s turn next. But, wait, there’s more. Guthrie was a leftist, so it’s a conservative’s turn. A conservative man’s turn. Appoint Andrew Bolt as ABC chair.

Peter Campion, Tolga, Qld

I'm surprised that Adam Creighton describes Adam Smith as an economist (“Helping the farmers? And cows might fly”, 26/2). He was a moral philosopher, whose The Wealth of Nations was an overview of the early capitalist system, including benefits and problems, not an economic textbook. The first generally recognised economist was David Ricardo, born 49 years after Adam Smith.

Norm Neill, Darlinghurst, NSW

The ABC cameraman who posted scurrilous comments about Peter Dutton (“ABC staffer lashes Dutton on Facebook”, 26/2) was clearly unaware of, or forgot, the FB golden rule: never post anything you wouldn't be happy to have on page three of The Australian.

Randal Williams, Burnside, SA
