Last Post: Curfews, premiers and the destruction of Juukan Gorge

I am an 85-year-old great-grandmother who lived in London during World War II. We had bombs dropping around our heads, not knowing where they would land. However, we never had a curfew or lockdown. These are conditions usually imposed by an occupying army, not your own government. I cannot believe I shall end my days living under these conditions. I only hope that at the next Anzac Parade, these so-called leaders do not attend, as I am wondering what all these brave soldiers died for. This is not the Australia I know and love and had much respect for.

It is a sunny day here in Melbourne. As I gaze out my window, I wonder whether it would not be better for everyone to be ordered outside to play golf or go fishing. Our vitamin D levels would receive a welcome boost, providing an important natural resistance to the virus.

It is beyond ridiculous that whole states are shut down. For instance, there are little pubs throughout country areas that are miles from anywhere and they should be open. An example is Patchewollock in northwestern Victoria, a Mallee farming area. A pub is a place where friends can get together, responsibly, and share problems. They are an essential service. Common sense must prevail.

Isn’t it obvious that by keeping Victoria’s borders closed Dan Andrews is also protecting the rest of the country from further spread of this virus? Considering the ugly pile-on perhaps he should just let it rip.

What hubris, deceit and arrogance Rio Tinto has delivered to the ancestral owners, nation and shareholders. Penalties must include: dismissal of responsible executives, Juukan Gorge rubble made a national monument and a $1 billion fine payable immediately.

Dr Ross Wilkie, Ballarat, Vic

Rumours the Oscars will only go ahead if 30 per cent of the prima donnas and narcissists are in some way tolerable are wildly exaggerated.

Peter Barnes, Revesby, NSW

While the community debates whether certain companies have a social licence to operate, nobody seems to be questioning whether the Victorian and Queensland governments have one. My guess is they both lost their social licences some while back.

If Annastacia Palaszczuk isn’t conducting the orchestra she should get off the rostrum.

Peter Hurdwell, Mount Colah, NSW
