Last Post: Confounded by birthday honours

What was so strikingly eminent about the service given by Mark McGowan and Dan Andrews (“Labor duo catch a pair of Covid honours”, 10/6)? Have I missed something?

Pastor de Lasala, Seaforth, NSW

Dan Andrews’ gong will certainly achieve one thing – swell the ranks of the republican movement.

Geoff O’Brien, Eltham, Vic

If Dan Andrews receives the highest award in the King’s Birthday honours, what do you get for really achieving something?

Roseanne Schneider, Toowoomba, Qld

If politicians are pushing for nuclear energy as part of the reduction of emissions, we need to know where and how long the nuclear waste will be deposited and what long-term effects it will have on our environment for the future.

Michael Howitt, Tewantin, Qld

With the consensus that it takes 10-15 years to build a nuclear power plant and more than 10 billion litres of water to cool it, then logically we should build one next to Snowy 2.0, where we would have two pollution-free sources of energy completed at about the same time.

Paul Haege, Darling Point, NSW

Thank you, Gemma Tognini, for once again clearly describing the lack of leadership against anti-Semitism in our country (“Time for corporate Australia to stand up to anti-Semitism”, 8-9/6). Hopefully, your call to “speak up when it counts” will result in some overdue action.

Vera Jacoby, Bellevue Hill, NSW

Chris Uhlmann’s hilarious account of his time as a security guard in western Sydney (“All lathered up and waiting for China”, 8-9/6) shows how desperately unprepared we are for any future conflict. Let’s hope we hear from Uhlmann again next Saturday. And the Saturday after that.

PC Wilson, Gold Coast, Qld

Terrific article by Chris Ulmann. Who says military strategy has to be complicated?

Geoff Mathews, Glenelg North, SA

Will the federal opposition never learn? Peter Dutton’s gas-and-nuclear policy will have some populist appeal but it’s a distraction.

Kevin Burke, Sandringham, Vic

The Premier of Queensland is throwing money around prior to the coming state election (“Miles empties his state’s piggy bank to save Labor”, 8-9/6). The majority of Queensland will accept this largesse but, as a matter of principle, may still not vote for him.

Ed Turner, Sinnamon Park, Qld
