Last Post: China, Trump and the wait for a Covid vaccine

I see the Victorian attorney-general has bailed out. Is there anyone left down there? If so, can the last one turn out the lights? Withdraw that. The lights will likely go off on their own soon.

Tony Brownlee, Sydney, NSW

Well, I have just purchased a new washing machine, stamped Made in Germany. So take that, China.

Kaye Neale, Upper Hermitage, SA

Just waiting for an announcement from the company that holds the 99-year lease over Darwin Port saying it has had to review some operational aspects, in particular, “rights of access”.

Lindsay Binning, Scarborough, WA

I am intrigued by Lesley Walker’s comparison of carbon emissions per capita in Australia and China (Last Post, 17/12). I assume the figures for Australia are correct and from a freely available source. I assume the China figures were sourced from The Ministry of Truth.

David Harrison, Coogee, NSW

Rather than singing the national anthem in the Eora language before all sporting matches I think it should be sung in Chinese to get us used to the idea.

Brian Dellow, Oberon, NSW

Did Cardinal Pell go “stir crazy” during his time in prison? He calls Donald Trump “a bit of a barbarian, but ‘our’ barbarian”, regarding him as a Christian who brings his values to the public sphere. What values are these? Other observers see Trump as a role model for deadly sinners. He is a vengeful, lying, cheating, unforgiving, divisive, egocentric bully. His capacity for turning the other cheek and loving his neighbour is non-existent.

Rowan Scotcake, South Fremantle, WA

Rescinding liberty of the private sector has been detestable but quiet Australians tolerated this while there was hope for a vaccine. In this context, we should give credit to Operation Warp Speed, which proved to be the Trump card democracies needed. Once more, Australia looked to America and it delivered in spades.

Ian Levy, Avalon, NSW

I have long admired Niki Savva’s deftness in clapping Scott Morrison’s achievements with one hand and belting him around the ears with the other (“‘Pragmatic’ PM stumbles over his frontbench”, 17/12).

Ed Turner, Brisbane, Qld

Hop off your high horse, Ian McDonald. I was looking at real estate with a view to joining your Tamborine Mountain bastion.

Dave Chibeba, Toormina, NSW
