Last Post: Canada clash, Hunter Biden and Aunty’s grammar

If Australia were a real soccer (sorry, football) nation every galah in the pet shop would be calling for the head of the Matildas coach to be placed on a pike. I will reserve judgment until after the Canada game.

Australia has signed off on four coalmine extensions in the past two months and is ever expanding our gas exports. Not sure the people in Greece who say “it’s hell here” will be wild about Australia’s emissions policies either (“Evacuation ordered as Greece burns”, 28/7).

Amy Hiller, Kew, Vic

Twice this week I have heard ABC employees using the all-too-common grammatical infelicity of the type “The surfer was laying on the beach”. If the ABC, the guardian of all things cultural, can’t insist on good grammar, how can it hope to retain the confidence of old pedants such as I?

David Morrison, Springwood, NSW

John Dorman, Toowoomba, Qld

Wind and solar generation and distribution cause more harm than small modular reactors?

Isabelle Henry, Ascot Vale, Vic

The Net Zero Australia report mentions capital expenditure for upgrading the grid of $1.5 trillion by 2030. Dividing that eye-watering sum by 25 million Australians comes to $60,000 over seven years or close to $10,000 a year for each man, woman and child. Lunacy!

Dominic Wild, Bentley, WA

The government’s plan B when the renewables plan fails will be to lose government to the Liberals and hope they can fix it.

Robin Southey, Port Fairy, Vic

Denmark is “leading the way” on energy transitioning? I think not. Denmark imports 100 per cent of its wood pellets from North America, and burning those pellets releases relatively more carbon dioxide than burning oil, gas and even coal.

Daniela Thompson, Matraville, NSW

Yes, it looks now as if the voice referendum is headed for a No.

Ken Moore, Chapel Hill, Qld

Robert Gottliebsen’s column should have given immense joy to share investors for whom the word schadenfreude has special appeal (“Shorters get caught short”, 28/7).

Bob Miller, Leederville, Qld

Can we interpret Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ support for the voice to be a foreboding of invoices to follow?

Robin Flannery, Parrearra, Qld
